8079 aluminium foil at 0.02 mm in O temper is a converter foil, supplied 1000 mm wide on 76 mm or 152 mm cores, plain, lacquered or pre-laminated.
The packaging range takes converter foil from 0.006 mm in 1235, 8079 and 8011 for laminates, lids, sachets and pouches. At 0.02 mm this product sits at the heavy end of that converter band rather than at the thin end, and the two ends do different jobs.
The thin end is chosen where the laminate needs a barrier layer and nothing more. This gauge is chosen where the finished pack also has to hold a shape, survive a process after filling, or stand up in a display. That is the practical difference between a foil that is part of a film and a foil that gives the pack its body.
At 0.02 mm a converter stops treating the foil as a coating and starts treating it as a layer with mechanical consequences. It adds stiffness to the laminate, it resists the creasing that shows through on a printed pack, and it gives the pack an edge that does not curl at the seam.
O temper keeps the foil soft enough to laminate without cracking at the nip and to fold at a lap without lifting. Where the pack has to hold a shape on its own, that comes from the temper of the laminate and the sealant, not from making the foil harder.
Bonding decides the result more often than gauge does. The surface has to be clean and dry, free of rolling oil, and matched to the adhesive the converter runs, because a foil that bonds on one line can fail on another with the same gauge and the same alloy.
Typical uses include flexible laminates, lidding, sachets and pouches.
